LEGACY AND OTHER PROJECTS
CARL SANDBURG SCHOOL HISTORY
PROJECT.
In 1964, 8th grade students from Carl Sandburg wrote a History of
Mundelein. Their work is available at the Fremont Public Library. In
2009, the staff and students at Carl Sandburg updated the History from
1964 to the present.
COMMEMORATIVE BOOKLET.
A
commemorative historical booklet, produced by Pioneer Press, will be
mailed to all Mundelein residents sometime in late March 2009. The
booklet will feature historical photos and articles highlighting
Mundelein’s development and growth over the years.
VOICES OF MUNDELEIN.
The Kirk Players are leading this ambitious effort to develop an
original play based on the stories told by Mundelein residents.
Volunteers will interview anyone interested in recounting a good story
or talking about life in Mundelein. Interviews will be assembled into a
series of monologues to be performed this summer by the Kirk Players.
CENTENNIAL PLAZA.
One of
two “legacy” projects, the plaza subcommittee hopes to build a plaza in
the now vacant, northwest corner of Kracklauer Park that will include
attractive landscaping, benches, public art, a time capsule, and a clock
tower. The project is being undertaken without public funding (tax
deductible donations are welcomed), although the Park District and the
Village are fully in support of the concept and are represented on the
planning committee.
RESTORATION OF OLD #1.
This is the second “legacy” project. Old #1 is the original fire truck
donated to the Village by George Cardinal Mundelein in 1925. The
Village purchased the vehicle and the restoration is underway. The
objective is to complete the restoration without tax funding. Donations
are welcome and fundraising is underway. Plans are to unveil the
restored vehicle at the Community Banquet, October 17, 2009.
