DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS - Kenneth A. Miller, Director

Organization

The Public Works Department is divided into five divisions, each headed by a superintendent. Collectively these divisions are charged with operating and maintaining the public facilities and infrastructure. They also provide assistance to the public and other village departments during periods of general emergency. The department is under the oversight of the Director of Public Works.

Administration

Public Works Administration includes the Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Director of Public Works, and two full time secretaries.

The Director of Public Works and Public Works Administration staff is responsible for the supervision, oversight, direction, and control of all aspects of the daily Public Works operations and divisions and the Director of Public Works is also the Safety Director for the Village of Mundelein. The department is organized into five divisions.

Facility Maintenance Division

This division is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of village buildings as part of the Preventative Maintenance Program. This includes minor care of the mechanical equipment, general woodworking, electrical, plumbing, painting, heating/venting/air conditioning, and assisting in preparing bid specifications and overseeing contracted work when necessary, such as the landscape maintenance and HVAC programs.

The division also repairs and maintains the village-owned streetlights; assists in the care and maintenance of village-maintained trees; in snow and ice removal operations and holiday and seasonal decorations and banners.

Street Maintenance Division

This division is responsible for the maintenance, construction and operations of nearly 90 miles of village roadways, snow and ice control and removal, street sweeping, street signs, approximately 65 miles of storm sewer, public sidewalks, and parkway trees.

The division also provides department personnel with training on heavy equipment operations.

In addition, the division is the main "turn-to" group in providing assistance to the remaining Village of Mundelein departments, or for the Village of Mundelein's special activities and events.

They provide special or emergency services to the Fire and Police Departments, coordination, set-up, and removal of the Mundelein Days Celebration. This division is extremely active in short and long-term maintenance and special needs of the Village of Mundelein.

The division is known countywide for its excellence in providing ice and snow removal operations.

Wastewater Division

This division is responsible for the control of wastewater collection and treatment facilities; administration, analysis, evaluations, and operations involved in meeting the federal and state E.P.A. requirements. Currently the division operates and maintains a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility, six sanitary lift stations (pumping facilities), and over 100 miles of sanitary sewer collection mains. The personnel assigned to the collection section must oversee the administration of E.P.A. required Industrial Pre-Treatment Compliance Programs which includes the review, analysis, and enforcement of discharge received from business, commercial, and industrial sewer users. This program ensures that discharges meet local, state, and federal requirements limiting the discharge of toxic or otherwise unsuitable substances into the sanitary system and/or into the environment.

The average daily flow is nearly 4 million gallons.

Vehicle Maintenance Division

This division conducts preventative and repair maintenance of the entire fleet and inventory of Village of Mundelein vehicles, and mobile and small equipment.

The staff conducts reviews and purchases supplies and parts involved in keeping these resources in excellent operating condition, as well as playing an integral part in the specification and bidding process of purchasing new vehicles and equipment.

The Vehicle Maintenance personnel also play an important and active role in the pre-and post-snow storm periods, as well as being on callback during the storm to operate and/or repair ice and snow removal equipment as needed.
