Purpose and Function

The purpose and function of the Building Department is to ensure public safety along with health and welfare, during building construction and renovation to secure the safety of life and property from hazards incidental to the design, erection, repair and occupancy of buildings through proper inspection practices; and to preserve the appearance and property value of existing housing through efficient code enforcement.


  • Adopt, administer and enforce the Village of Mundelein’s building codes, and local Ordinances
  • Review building plans, issue permits and perform inspections to ensure that construction conforms to applicable codes
  • Notify owners of property that does not meet Village Code and ensure that corrections are made
  • Investigate complaints related to building codes, zoning and local ordinances.
  • Register contractors to perform work in Mundelein
  • Administer the Registration of Rental Housing.
  • Building Director is staff liaison to the Permits Committee.

"Notice of Violation" letters are issued when citizens and others fail to comply with village ordinance. Non-traffic citations are issued if no cooperation is received following the "Notice of Violation." Building Department personnel and the Village Attorney, represent the village in court on these matters.

The Village of Mundelein’s Homeowner's Manual—A Guide to the Building Permit Process— is available to residents at no charge. Also, the Village’s Building Department can provide residents with design specifications, Village impact fee information, Contractor licensing requirements, Zoning information, Tax plat maps, and building code information to name just a few.
