Drive Carefully - Schools Are Open

Schools are open and the Mundelein Police Department reminds motorists to be especially careful and watch for children on their way to and from school.

“It’s up to us to look out for these youngsters because they are not thinking much about safety—especially those going to school for the first time,” said Chief Raymond J. Rose.  “They’re young and are too excited to be aware of traffic dangers to pedestrians.”

Nearly 27,000 children under the age of 15 lose their lives or suffer injuries in motor vehicle crashes each year, according to AAA-CMC.  In fact, traffic crashes involve a disproportionate number of children and lead all causes of death and injury among youngsters through age 14.

Drivers can help protect children by being especially careful near schools and in residential areas, watching their speed, and obeying the adult crossing guard.

Remember, SLOW DOWN IN SCHOOL ZONES AND DRIVE CAREFULLY!
