A-May-Zing Mundelein Day of Caring

This event occurs in the month of May and solicits the assistance of area volunteers who help senior citizens with household chores which may be difficult or impossible for them to handle on their own.  It brings people together and shows the true meaning of a community.  Many tasks that are accomplished include washing windows, cleaning gutters, mowing lawns, moving heavy/awkward items, etc.

Summary of 2008 A-May-Zing Mundelein Day of Caring

A-May-Zing Mundelein’s 13th Annual Day of Caring was held on Saturday, May 10, 2008.  This year 215 residents volunteered their time and energy to complete projects at 43 locations throughout the village.  The majority (43) of these locations were residential.  Non-residential projects included clean up and litter pickup at Route 83 / Hawley, Kracklauer Park and the Metra Station.

The Fire Department did 3 repairs as well as cleaning the gutters on 28 homes.  They were able to do Home Safety Inspections on 27 homes with the following results:  15 smoke detectors and 1 CO detector were either added or replaced, 34 batteries were replaced in smoke detectors, 3 bad flexible gas lines were found, 1 water heater was found improperly installed creating a fire hazard, 3 clothes dryers had exhaust vent ducts either missing or plugged and 6 homes had hot water temperatures exceeding the state code.  A number of these items were life threatening, with the help of the Fire Department these problems were identified and/or corrected.  This has proven to be an excellent addition to A-May-Zing Mundelein projects.

Volunteer participants included Mayor Kenneth Kessler, Trustee Sullivan, Mundelien Fire Department, Mundelein Community Women’s Club, The Chapel, Ivanhoe Congregation Church, The Mundelein Jaycees, Alpine Chapel, Boy Scout Troops 89, 189 and 388, Girl Scout Troop 1764 and 3715, Mechanics Grove School, Target Employees, Best Buy Employees, The Mundelein Queens, Santa Maria 7th Graders and numerous individual citizens and family groups.

This year we had several local businesses donate either supplies or volunteers.  Vecchie Landscape donated landscaping services and Matthew’s Clearview donated window-cleaning services.  Taylor Rental donated ladders, Ace Hardware donated lawn bags, and Dunkin Donuts donated donuts for breakfast.  Kaisers Pizza, Bill’s Pizza, and Rita Pia’s Pizzeria donated over 30 pizzas for the volunteer lunch.  Culvers also donated custard for the volunteer lunch.

We have already started receiving feedback from the homeowners and it has been extremely positive.
