This event occurs in the month of May and solicits the assistance of area volunteers who help senior citizens with household chores which may be difficult or impossible for them to handle on their own. It brings people together and shows the true meaning of a community. Many tasks that are accomplished include washing windows, cleaning gutters, mowing lawns, moving heavy/awkward items, etc.
Summary of 2010 A-May-Zing Mundelein Day of Caring
A-May-Zing Mundelein’s 15th Annual Day of Caring was held on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Despite the cold weather, 211 residents volunteered their time and energy to complete 132 projects at 47 locations throughout the Village. The majority of these locations were residential. Non-residential projects included clean up and litter pick up on Archer between Division and Hammond, Kracklauer Park, and the Metra Station.
The Public Works Department was instrumental in the completion of each of the projects. They delivered and picked up supplies at many locations as well as picking up the garbage and lawn bags; without their help, the event would not have ran as smoothly as it did.
The Mundelein Fire Department visited 36 homes completing 29 gutter cleanings, seven home repairs, and 14 home safety inspections. The home repairs consisted of repairing a chimney flashing and cap, a gutter leak, kitchen exhaust termination, cracks in a driveway, hanging a shutter, and replacing a door lockset. The home safety inspections revealed a number of safety issues including six homes and one condo complex where the water temperature exceeded 115 degrees and, in some cases, up to 130 degrees. They cleared two plugged dryer vents, found one plugged furnace filter, found combustible materials close to a water heater, and a potential fire hazard caused by plugging power strips together. Additionally they found four smoke detectors that were no longer working and batteries were replaced in 21 smoke and CO detectors. One home was inspected that never had smoke detectors; they now have two smoke detectors and a CO detector.
Volunteer participants included Village Administrator John Lobaito, Chief Raymond Rose, Trustee Sullivan, Trustee Voss, Mundelein Fire Department personnel, Mundelein Police Department personnel, Mundelein Police Explorers, Mundelein Community Women’s Club, the Mundelein Queens, Walgreen’s, Weston Solutions, Girl Scout Troop 40697, Boy Scout Troops 195 and 388, Cub Scout Pack 189, Mundelein After School Coalition, and the Word of Life Church Group.
This year we had several local businesses donate either supplies or volunteers:
Dreams Granted and About Lawns donated their services to mow ten lawns
Taylor Rental donated ladders
Ace Hardware donated $100 worth supplies
Home Depot donated $100 worth supplies
AMPAC donated 2,000 lawn bags
Grainger donated work gloves
Groot donated a dumpster
We have already started receiving feedback from the homeowners which has been extremely positive.
