The Senior Citizen’s Academy is the first of its kind in Lake County.  Thirty-eight senior citizens attended the first academy.  Classes are held once a week, for 10 weeks, 1½ hours in length.

Officers volunteer their time to prepare and present a lesson plan on different aspects of being a police officer such as: Traffic Stops, Street Gang Awareness and Interdiction, Defensive Tactics, Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS), Metropolitan Enforcement Group (MEG), Investigations, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) and much more.

During the traffic stop segment, the seniors acted as police officers, while officers acted as the vehicle drivers.  Local businesses donated notebooks, paper and supplies to record each lesson.

A graduation ceremony is held and each graduate receives an academy T-shirt, diploma and a coffee mug.
