AREA General Store to Host Meet and Greet for Mundelein Resident, Vietnam Vet

Rob DuPont, owner of Mundelein's AREA General Store located at 18 E. Park Street, is pleased to announce a Meet and Greet and Book Signing event on October 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring Mundelein resident and Vietnam Veteran, Andy C. Westin. Westin is prominently featured in the newly released and highly acclaimed book, “Hue 1968-A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam,” by Mark Bowden.

Westin is mentioned throughout the book, "Hue 1968," and the entire chapter seven is devoted to the correspondence he had with his wife during the battle. The battle of Hue was considered a turning point in the war for the Viet Cong. Westin will be at AREA General Store to answer questions and sign books. Also, he will have a scrap book of personal photos taken during his time in Viet Nam.

“AREA General Store is intended to be a community meeting place where people can gather to visit with one another, showcase local products, and discuss current events. We are very pleased to host this Meet and Greet with Andy,” DuPont said.

This new release, “Hue 1968,” is earning rave reviews. According to an online book review Mark Bowden, the author of the best-selling “Black Hawk Down,” has applied his signature blend of deep reportage and character-driven storytelling to bring readers a fresh look at the 1968 battle in the Vietnamese city of Hue.

This compelling and highly readable narrative relies significantly on first-person accounts from American servicemen and Vietnamese soldiers, guerrillas and civilians. Bowden was able to report on the Vietnamese with the help of two translator-researchers and a Vietnamese colleague at the University of Delaware, where he is writer in residence. “Hue 1968” is a meticulous and vivid retelling of an important battle. It brings an old war to life for young Americans, and perhaps it will prompt a wider reflection on how to apply the lessons of Vietnam to our wars of today.

“We hope residents stop by the Meet and Greet and spend some time with Andy. He has a compelling story to tell and this is a nice opportunity for people to express their gratitude to him for his service to our country,” DuPont concluded.

The Village of Mundelein plans to recognize Vietnam Veterans at a 2017 Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony on Monday, October 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Village Hall. Mayor Steve Lentz and the Board of Trustees are recognizing veterans of the Vietnam War who either reside, have previously resided, work, or attend a veteran organization in the Village of Mundelein. All veterans who served in the military during the Vietnam War, but did not deploy to Vietnam, are cordially invited and encouraged to attend.
