Fremont School District Receives Highest Financial Honor

The Village of Mundelein is proud to announce that Fremont School District 79 was one of 150 districts nationwide to receive the prestigious Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for the 2017-2018 budget year from the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO). This is the sixth consecutive year Fremont School District 79 received the award.

The award reflects the commitment of Fremont School District in achieving the highest standards of budgeting. The Meritorious Budget Award designation is the result of an objective external evaluation of the overall management and communication of the school district's budget.

“We are very honored to receive this Meritorious Budget Award,” said Dr. Bill Robertson, Superintendent of Schools. Robertson added, “This award is a true reflection of the great work and commitment of our Business Office personnel to implement high-quality standards for fiscal practices.”

FSD79 educates approximately 2,300 students in preschool through eighth grade and serves students from a thirty-four square mile area from the communities of Mundelein, Wauconda, Hawthorn Woods, Grayslake, Round Lake, Long Grove, and Libertyville. FSD79 students feed into Mundelein High School, Stevenson High School, and Grayslake High School.

Background on the Process

Participants submit their budget applications to ASBO’s panel of financial professionals for review, during which they are assessed for compliance with the MBA Criteria Checklist and other requirements. Districts that successfully demonstrate they have met the necessary program requirements may earn the MBA award. Reviewers provide expert feedback, offering districts a learning opportunity to further improve their budget document.

“The application process helps school officials create an easy-to-read, accurate budget document that clearly communicates the district’s goals and objectives, and builds credibility and trust with their community.” said ASBO International Executive Director John Musso, adding, “The MBA serves as a gold-star designation and promotes continuous improvement—reasons districts apply year after year.”
