Mundelein’s Lakeside Recreation Center Undergoes Extensive Remodel to Cater to Broader Audience

Mundelein’s Lakeside Recreation Center recently hosted a ribbon cutting and a grand reopening to reveal a new and improved recreation center with activities for all age groups. Over the past several months, Lakeside Recreation Center, formerly Lakeside Lanes, has remodeled and expanded its activities. Now, it is the most comprehensive recreation center in Lake County. Fun activities for the entire family include: 24 bowling lanes with automatic scoring, bumper lanes for children, arcade, laser tag, video slot machines, rental rooms for events and parties, cocktail lounge, dockside dinner complete with weekly food and drink specials.

“We are not your normal local ‘bowling alley’ any longer. We are a family entertainment destination, thanks to the addition of the Jungle Adventure Laser Tag, Arcade, and our meeting space. Now, when people visit Lakeside Recreation Center they can have a great time without necessarily picking up a bowling ball. This was our goal with our remodel and rebrand of the facility. We are attracting guests to our facility from other communities as our facility now offers improved entertainment options for the entire family,” explains John Wing, owner of the business.

“Our laser tag arena is sure to be popular with our customers. We hired specialized arena architects and artists to create a unique jungle-theme course that appeals to all age groups,” Wing continues. The Village of Mundelein aided in the Lakeside Recreation Center remodel as funds from Mundelein’s Business Incentive Grant (BIG) Program were utilized.

“Lakeside Recreation Center was awarded a $25,000 grant through the BIG Program for interior improvements, which included electrical, fire suppression, and HVAC expenses related to the improvements. The facility looks fantastic and we are very proud to partner with Lakeside Recreation Center,” explains Colleen Malec, Planner.

According to Wing, business has improved significantly since the renovations. Revenues have improved about 25% since the remodel and re-branding. Some of the specific renovations include the removal of 8 bowling lanes to install the 2-story Jungle Adventure Laser Tag and Arcade. Now, Lakeside Recreation Center hosts laser tag and bowling birthday parties. On the bowling side, the company installed new automatic scoring, new synthetic lanes, new seating and flooring in the bowler's area, and new masking panels at the end of each lane.

The billiard room was removed and a new Conference and Banquet facility replaced it. This change enables Lakeside Recreation Center to host Corporate/business events, such as parties, awards ceremonies, team building, and meetings. New carpeting was installed throughout the facility. Exterior improvements include a new metal mansard/soffit, significant roof repairs, new building signs and soon-to-be new roadside sign and landscaping. The exterior of the building also was painted to enhance the facility and the company’s image.

“We are thrilled that Lakeside Recreation Center was able to utilize the BIG grant funds and make such dramatic improvements to their business. This is a win for them and for the entire Mundelein community.”
