Mundelein Arts Commission Extends Writing Contest Deadlines—Writers to Compete for Cash Prizes

The Mundelein Arts Commission (MAC) currently is hosting a short story contest and a ten-minute play competition and this is a reminder to writers that deadlines are approaching for the group's two writing contests. The short story contest deadline has been extended to July 14 (entries must be either emailed or postmarked by that date). The theme for the short story contest is "Home," which can be interpreted in any way. The judge for this contest is award‐winning Mundelein author and editor Richard Thomas. Cash prizes will be awarded for both contests.

The playwriting deadline for 10‐minute plays is July 30. Winning plays will be judged by Lake County actor/director Bob Sanders, and will be presented to the public in September. The MAC is also seeking directors and actors for the plays. Both contests have cash prizes and are open to all who live or work in Lake County. For details, contact

The MAC plans to publish story winners and honorable mentions into a preserved collection distributed to the winners called "Mundelein Writes". Winning playwrights will also have the chance to see their show produced for a public audience. The commission is also seeking anyone interested in directing the winning plays. Entrants must live or work in Lake County..

The first short-story writing theme will be “Home,” with writers interpreting this concept however they choose. Any genre is welcome. Short stories will be judged on plot, conflict, character, setting, point of view, theme, language, narrative devices, ton/voice, conventions, and structure. Stories are to be no more than 3,000 words, and the deadline is June 30, 2017.

Judge for the writing contest will be Mundelein resident Richard Thomas, award-winning author of seven books, including three short story collections and three novels. Thomas has more than 100 stories in print, and is the editor of four anthologies.

Rules and Submittal Instructions

The ten-minute play contest gives playwrights—both aspiring and experienced—the opportunity to see their original work produced in a workshop environment. There is no specific theme, though plays must run no longer than thirteen minutes. Playwrights are encouraged to submit shows with small casts and minimal technical requirements. Plays will be judged on plot, characterization, dialogue, content, overall effect, presentability, and mechanics. Deadline for plays is July 30, 2017.

Judge for the playwriting contest will be Lake Forest native Bob Sanders, former artistic director for Clockwise Theater in Waukegan. Sanders has appeared in numerous shows on and off Broadway and in regional theater. Since returning to the area he has worked with many area professional and community theaters, the most recent being Shattered Globe Theater.
