Mundelein Park & Recreation District will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, April 24 at 6 p.m., to kick-off the construction of a new 12,000 SF recreational facility to be built at the site of the former Community Park Chalet at 888 Dunbar Road in Mundelein. The public is welcome to attend.
MPRD Executive Director, Margaret Resnick, will be on-hand to share details of the future building along with Park District Board Members. Renderings of the building’s exterior and floor plans also will be shared.
The new building will include a gymnasium, activity room, dance studio, fitness studio, and instructional kitchen. Once the new building is complete, two new tennis courts will be built. The new facility is scheduled to open in early summer, 2018.
“Additional program space has become a big issue for the Park District. We have been working with other agencies to hold programs at their locations or have used some of our spaces that may have been less than ideal for the activity. We are excited to start the construction for this new facility as we know it will offer so much to the Mundelein community,” Resnick explains.
In October, 2015, the Park District was notified that it was receiving a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for $2,363,800 for the construction of the new recreational facility. However, in January, 2016, all grants were suspended due to the State’s financial challenges. In August, 2016, the MPRD received notification that the grant was reinstated and this prompted Mundelein Park District officials to move ahead with the construction project.
The District’s current debt will be retired in 2017 and new bonds were issued to keep the tax rate level. This means the residents of Mundelein will be able to enjoy this new, 12,000 square foot facility without an increase in their property tax rate. Expenses to operate the building will be paid for by revenue generated through activities held at the new building.
