Trustees Approve Interim Police Chief Appointment
At the July 27, 2020 Board Meeting, the Trustees approved the appointment of Deputy Chief John Monahan to Interim Police Chief effective August 3, 2020. Current Police Chief Eric Guenther recently was selected as Mundelein’s new Village Administrator effective August 3, 2020. A search is underway for the new Police Chief.
Deputy Chief Monahan has served with the Mundelein Police Department for nearly 25 years. He began his career as a Patrol Officer in 1996 and he has been a member of the command staff since 2003. Monahan was appointed Deputy Chief in 2011 after serving in roles as Commander from 2009 to 2011 and Sergeant from 2003 to 2009. In September 2019, Deputy Chief Monahan earned the designation of “Certified Eligible Police Chief” by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
“With seventeen years of command staff experience, Deputy Chief John Monahan is highly qualified to serve as our interim Police Chief while we go through the selection process of hiring a permanent Police Chief. I look forward to working with him,” said Steve Lentz, Mayor.
Deputy Chief Monahan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Ball State University. He resides in Grayslake with his wife and three children.
