Health Notice Regarding Coronavirus

Post Date:03/06/2020

While the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) news is concerning, we believe it is important to point out that, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health, there are other respiratory viruses like Influenza A +B currently circulating in Illinois.  Fever, coughing, and difficulty breathing are symptoms associated with all of these conditions; therefore, anyone exhibiting these symptoms should not assume to have COVID-19.  If you, or anyone in your family, develops such symptoms, we urge you to contact your medical provider immediately.

In the meantime, it is more important to follow everyday preventative actions you and your family can take for protection:

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may contain germs.

Currently, the Lake County Health Department believes the immediate risk to the public remains low.  Lake County residents, students, visitors, and workers do not need to alter their behavior or use masks or gloves. Additionally, the Illinois Department of Health released an update on the preventative steps they are taking to limit the spread of COVID-19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s update regarding the Corona Virus response in the U.S recommends that communities should proactively begin preparatory instructional plans should the virus spread. As of this moment, however, the Lake County Health Department does not recommend any significant changes to normal operations.

In the meantime, the Village of Mundelein has reviewed our procedures in the event we need to make alternative plans.  Each department is taking special care to ensure proper equipment and procedures are in place.  We will keep you informed regarding this process and any changes that may occur.
