Mundelein Commemorates 25th Anniversary of Acquiring Lake Michigan Water

The Village of Mundelein is proud to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of acquiring Lake Michigan water. In June of 1992, Mundelein officially started pumping Lake Michigan water to residents and businesses.

The Lake Michigan Water Supply project enhanced the public health, safety, and welfare by improving water quality, and increasing water pressures for potable supply and fire protection for the community. This water is delivered to Mundelein by Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA) and Mundelein utilizes over 100 miles of water main to deliver water throughout the Village.

The Village stores, pumps, and delivers the water through its water system to over 10,000 metered customers. Acquiring this high-quality water made it possible for Mundelein to abandon several wells, while keeping a few in service for emergency purposes.

This design provided for the current and future water needs for the community, nearly doubling Mundelein’s water capacity. This is a critical infrastructure improvement because it positions Mundelein for future growth in terms residential and commercial development.

Total storage in 1992 was 4.75 million gallons and total water storage today is 6.75 million gallons.

Fresh water is indeed something to acknowledge and celebrate!
